Beards make men not only more attractive but also healthier, according to a scientific study
The Bradys are on the roll right now, and there are no signs of that changing anytime soon. However, the most, it seems, is in Australia.
The best beard styles
However, the findings, unsurprisingly, do not apply to men who only keep a beard or mustache. If you proudly grow a beard and feel that the findings about the attractiveness of men with beards do not apply to you, it will probably be better to shave your beard or grow a full beard. At least from a scientific point of view.
In addition to the fact that a beard makes us more attractive, science suggests that it also makes us healthier.
By tucking in the chin, regular shaving falls off your to-do list, and unpleasant rashes can disappear completely over time. In our opinion, in a win-win situation, what do you say?
However, do not forget to take good care of your beard and keep it clean. Regular washing with a quality beard shampoo should therefore be an absolute necessity.
Consequently, the shorter or thinner the beard, the lower its level of UV protection is naturally. Stubble provides the same protection as clean, shaven skin, and therefore none.
Well, we don’t know about you, but we are putting away the razors for the foreseeable future.
Every bearded person knows this: the skin underneath it itches so much that you want to get rid of the hair. Before you rush to grab a razor, read our anti-itch tips
It’s maddening. You practiced patience for months and grew a stylish, full beard. And now? The skin underneath it itches and itches almost unbearably.
Why is this so, and what should be done? Shave it off? Please don’t! Here we reveal what exactly is responsible for itchy beards and what relieves the itching, without sacrificing the painstakingly cultivated beard.
Why does the beard itch?
No question, beards look casual and are very popular. But the fact is, a beard is also a battlefield for bacteria. And they are largely responsible for the annoying itching. In addition, there are dead skin cells that would otherwise simply fall off but can all too easily get caught in the hair and thus cause itching.
What helps? These are four tips.
1: If your beard itches, limit your intake of bacteria
Your hands offer bacteria the very best transport conditions. Whenever you fiddle with your beard hair, you are introducing the very same microbes that you previously came into contact with on the toilet, on the bus, or while shopping.
“Every time you run your fingers through your beard, bacteria and fungi are transferred,” says dermatologist Joshua Zeichner. At a certain point, your beard becomes a breeding ground for bacteria. Therefore, keep your hands out of your face. If you touch your itchy beard, it’s only to clean it.
By the way: This is how you care for a 3-day beard

2: Wash and oil regularly to prevent itching
“Skin flakes that get caught in the beard hair every day also contribute significantly to the dreaded itching,” says Richard Tucker, beard expert at the London barbershop Ruffians. “Men should pay attention to their beard care and wash their beard regularly; then they will get the problem under control.”
But be careful: washing does not mean applying shower gel to your beard in the shower. It’s better to invest in a proper beard shampoo. Shower gels degrease the hair, making it strawy and scratchy. No problem for a 3-day beard, but a problem for a full beard.
Beard oil and a beard brush are also worthwhile for longer beards; the tools not only make the hair shine but also nourish, invigorate, and soothe the facial skin at the same time.
3: Tame frizzy beard hair so that it doesn’t prick
Frizzy, irregularly grown beard hair, in particular, provides a good basis for microorganisms. “In the worst case, bacteria trapped in the hair bends cause infections,” says Zeichner. “Curly and twisted beard hair can also grow towards the skin and cause pseudo-folliculitis there.” ‘Pseudofolliculitis barbae’, to use dermatological jargon, is an irritation of the skin caused by beard hair, which, in combination with bacteria, can cause itching, ingrown beard hair, and inflammation.
“If you tend to do this, you should develop a beard routine that promotes straight beard hair growth,” says barber Tucker. He advises:
Wash your beard every second or third day.
Not more often; otherwise, it will lose its elasticity and boost oil production unnecessarily.
Blow-dry your beard at a maximum of medium heat to relax and straighten the beard hair.
Men with a full beard should get a beard brush. It prevents the hair from tangling and smoothes it.
Mild beard cleaning products and moisturizing styling products soften rough stubble so it pricks less.
But use beard-styling products carefully. If there is too much oil and cream in the beard, bacteria and dirt particles can easily become trapped. By the way, It’s that easy to make your beard oil
4: Plane off the edges of the beard sharply
If your beard itches, it could also be because you are not shaving the contours correctly or are using the wrong device. “Electric razors, in particular, can cause skin irritation and, in the worst case, infections because they are harder to clean,” says Tucker. “Barbers recommend wet shaving around the beard.”
This can be done with a standard wet razor. But safety razors are the first choice for those with beards. “This creates precise contours. But above all, they cut the hair sharply without pulling on the hair root,” says the expert. This could lead to inflammation and itching again.
Sure, beard care and styling products are usually a little more expensive than shower gel and standard razors. But proper beard tools and care products will help keep your beard looking and feeling casual. And it’s worth it to you, right?
Frequently Asked Questions!
Why is my beard itchy?
If your beard is feeling itchy, you’re not alone! It can be annoying. There are a few reasons why this might happen. First off, if you’ve just started growing out your beard or trying a new style like an undercut, the hair can feel prickly as it grows. This is normal and usually gets better with time. Another reason could be dryness. Just like our skin, facial hair needs moisture too. If you’re not using any conditioner or oil, your beard may end up feeling rough and cause itching. A good beard oil can help keep things smooth and comfy! Also, don’t forget about dead skin cells. They can build up under your beard and lead to irritation. Regular washing and exfoliating can make a big difference. Finally, allergies or irritants from products like soap or shampoo might also trigger that itchiness. Make sure what you use is gentle on your skin. So, if your beard is itching, try moisturizing it, keeping it clean, and checking for any products that might not agree with you. Hang in there; it’ll get better!

When your body is well-hydrated, it reflects on your skin, too! Avoid Scratching: It might be tempting to scratch that itch, but try to resist! Scratching can make things worse by irritating the skin even more. Be mindful of products: Some styling products may contain harsh chemicals that could irritate your skin
Is an itchy beard a sign that hair is growing?
An itchy beard can sometimes mean that your hair is growing, but it’s not a guarantee. When you’re growing out facial hair, the new hairs can push through the skin and irritate. This itchiness is pretty common, especially if you’re trying to grow a thicker beard or if you’ve just started letting it grow. However, keep in mind that itchiness can also happen for other reasons, like dry skin or using certain products that don’t agree with your skin. So, while an itchy beard might signal some growth, it’s important to take care of your skin too! If the itch gets annoying, consider moisturizing or using gentle beard oils to soothe your skin. Remember, patience is key when growing out any hairstyle!
Is beard itch a bad thing?
Beard itch can be pretty annoying, especially if you’re trying to grow a stylish beard alongside an undercut hairstyle. It’s that uncomfortable feeling you get when your facial hair is still new and not fully grown yet. But here’s the good news: beard itch isn’t necessarily a bad thing! It’s mostly just a sign that your beard is still adjusting as it grows. Think of it like breaking into a new pair of shoes; it might hurt at first, but soon enough, everything will feel right. To make things easier, you can use some beard oil or moisturizer to soothe the itchy spots. That way, you can rock both your undercut and your growing beard without all the discomfort. So hang in there—the itchiness will pass, and you’ll have a great-looking beard in no time!
How do you get an itch-free beard?
Getting an itch-free beard can make a huge difference in how you feel about your facial hair. Here are some simple tips to help keep that annoying itch away: 1. Wash Your Beard: Use a gentle beard shampoo to clean your beard regularly. This helps remove dirt and dead skin, which can cause itching. 2. Moisturize: Just like your skin, your beard needs moisture, too! Use a good-quality beard oil or balm. It keeps the hair soft and nourishes the skin underneath. 3. Brush It Out: A soft bristle brush can help distribute oils throughout your beard and prevent tangles. Plus, it feels great on your skin! 4. Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water! Keeping yourself hydrated helps your skin stay healthy and reduces dryness. 5. Avoid Irritants: Some products might irritate your skin. Be careful with colognes or harsh soaps near your face, as they can make things worse. 6. Patience Is Key: If you’re growing out your beard for the first time, remember that it may take a few weeks for your skin to adjust. Stick with it! By following these steps, you’ll not only keep it
How long does it take for a beard to stop itching?
When you first grow a beard, it can feel super itchy. This usually happens because the hair is new and your skin isn’t used to it yet. Generally, most guys find that the itching starts to fade after about two to four weeks of growing their beard. During this time, keeping your face clean and using some moisturizer or beard oil can help soothe your skin. Remember, patience is key! Once your beard gets longer and softer, that annoying itch will likely go away for good. Just hang in there—it’ll be worth it!
In some places, the beard grows irregularly, and you ask yourself, “Can I stimulate the growth?” Here’s the answer:
Your beard doesn’t grow as full as your friends?
Don’t give up hope too quickly; many young men suffer from irregular beard growth. If you’re under 20 years old, there’s a good chance you’ll start to grow a beard.
The first beard hairs that begin to sprout during puberty are very thin. Some gaps in the beard close as the beard hairs become stronger towards the end of puberty in the early 20s. Tip: It is better to shave off the initially thin beard hairs. This looks neater than irregular fluff.
Does shaving speed up beard growth?
The myth persists. But: No, frequent shaving does not accelerate beard growth, and the hair does not grow back thicker. Because when you shave, you don’t come into contact with the hair root, which is responsible for the growth and quality of the beard hair.
But the beard hairs that are cut in the middle no longer have a frayed, pointed shape and are rougher and stronger. This way, you can at least cheat a little more on beard thickness.
Very important: Don’t play around with your beard hair or pull it. This will irritate the root, which, in the worst case, will stop hair production. This way, you can grow beard gaps yourself. You can find out here whether beard rollers accelerate beard growth instead.
Beard growth turbo testosterone
The fluctuations in the “male hormone” testosterone in the blood can also change the intensity of beard growth throughout life. Because testosterone levels also affect hair growth in men, for better or worse.
It increases in adolescence and often has not yet reached its peak at the end of puberty. While an increase in testosterone negatively affects the roots of the hair on the head and can lead to hair loss, it also causes increased body hair and thus increased beard growth, which covers smaller gaps well after a certain length.
Testosterone is responsible for the intensity of beard growth. Photo: Cottonbro / Pexels.com
By the way, artificially increasing testosterone levels for the sake of beard growth is not a good idea. Firstly, hormone preparations can only influence beard hair thickness and not the number and distribution of hair follicles. And secondly, you have to take into account that an increase in hormones can also lead to increased hair loss on the head.
Promising therapies for circular beard gaps
“The most common reasons why men with uneven beard growth or even real gaps in the beard area visit our specialist practice for hair diseases are circular hair loss (alopecia areata barbae) or congenital short growth of the beard hair,” reports dermatologist and hair specialist Dr. Frank-Matthias Schaart from Hamburg.
About 1 to 2 times a month, men with gaps in the beard area visit their specialist practice, asking for a diagnosis or therapeutic help. With these therapies, the specialist can give those affected hope, at least in the case of circular beard hair loss:
High-dose zinc treatments;
Topical immunotherapy by externally applying cortisone or injecting the hairless areas with cortisone crystal suspensions;
Treatment with the fractional laser. Schaart: “In around 50% of cases, the lost hair will completely regenerate after 15–18 weeks.”
However, “as a rule, there is no way to combat hereditary gaps in the beard, as the hair roots are missing or not even created,” says the expert. “In rare cases, infections of the beard hair roots caused by bacteria or fungi or “connective tissue diseases can be the cause of hair loss in the beard area.”
Can you transplant beard hair?
“Corrections in the upper lip area and on the cheeks are possible,” says Ursula Halsner, a hair surgeon from Munich. To put it simply, during the operation, tiny particles of skin (diameter approximately 0.9 millimeters) with hair roots are transplanted from the head to the face. “It is important that the hair on your head is strong enough to be suitable as a beard replacement. Hair that is too thin is unsuitable.”
The operation takes approximately sixty to ninety minutes, depending on the size of the grafts. “The healing time is only about ten days; a bandage is not necessary.” After twelve weeks, new beard hair begins to grow from the transplanted roots.
Make an appointment with a hair surgeon or send him a photo in advance to determine whether the operation is feasible. You can find more information about hair transplantation here.
Nutritional tips for a fuller beard
Before you decide on such drastic methods, you should first try to provide your beard with optimal growth conditions in a natural way: The nutrients biotin and silica have been proven to promote healthy hair growth. Preparations are available cheaply in drugstores.
However, with a healthy diet, you can save yourself this expense. Healthy, protein-rich foods such as vegetables, fruits, oatmeal, eggs, and cheese should have a permanent place on your menu.
By the way, rubbing the skin with hot mustard or garlic to stimulate hair roots to produce, fortunately, doesn’t work and belongs in the realm of beard myths.
Are there hair growth products for the beard?
Some men try to boost their beard growth with hair growth products for their heads. Reputable studies have proven, for example, the effectiveness of the active ingredients minoxidil or finasteride in hereditary hair loss on the head.
Whether minoxidil also works in the beard region is controversial: “Finasteride in tablet form generally does not help against irregular hair growth in the beard. Unlike in the area of the scalp hair, where it sometimes achieves sensational success in men’s genetic hair loss,” says hair expert Schaart, “If at all, you can try using a solution containing minoxidil, which you massage into the affected areas twice a day.
However, an effect is not certain here either.” Find out more about the side effects of finasteride here.
A full beard is still trendy; there is no question about it. If you have gaps in your beard that are extremely annoying or stressful for you, you should opt for a different beard style. Beard hairstyles that can be compatible with irregular hair growth include the Fu Manchu or the mustache, which is again very popular. You can find more inspiration in our beard hairstyle gallery.

Biotin for Beard Growth
Biotin is often talked about as a helpful supplement for beard growth, and many wonder if it can make a difference. Biotin, also known as vitamin B7, plays a key role in the health of hair, skin, and nails. If you’re looking to grow a fuller beard, adding biotin to your routine might be worth considering. It’s believed that biotin helps strengthen hair follicles, which could lead to improved beard growth.
The big question is, “Will biotin help with beard growth?” While no magic pill guarantees a thick beard, some studies suggest that biotin can support hair growth by enhancing the structure of keratin, a protein that makes up hair. For those dealing with patchy areas, biotin may help by promoting healthier hair growth overall.
However, it’s important to remember that biotin alone won’t solve all your beard growth challenges. Good sleep and stress management play crucial roles too. Lack of sleep and high stress can slow down hair growth, making it tougher to achieve that full beard look you desire. Aim for 7 to 8 hours of sleep each night and find ways to relax, whether through sports, hobbies, or spending time with friends.
In summary, while biotin can be a helpful addition to your beard care routine, it’s just one piece of the puzzle. With a bit of dedication to your overall health, including skincare and nutrition, you can work toward the beard you want. Remember, patience is key on this journey, and every effort you make is worth it!
Beard Growth Serum
Beard growth serum is a popular product for those looking to enhance their facial hair. That’s where beard growth serum comes in. This special oil or lotion is designed to help stimulate hair follicles, making it easier for your beard to grow.
One key ingredient often found in these serums is biotin, a vitamin that promotes hair health. While biotin is helpful, it’s important to remember that it’s just one part of the equation. To see results, you should also focus on your overall health. Eating a balanced diet rich in vitamins and nutrients, staying hydrated, and maintaining good skincare habits all play a crucial role in beard growth.
Using beard growth serum is simple. You apply it directly to your facial hair and skin, usually once or twice a day. With regular use, many people notice their beard becoming thicker, healthier, and more vibrant. However, patience is essential. It might take weeks or even months to see significant changes, so stick with it!
In summary, while beard growth serum can give your facial hair a boost, it works best when combined with a healthy lifestyle. Focus on nourishing your body, and remember that growing a great beard is a journey. With dedication and the right products, you can achieve the beard of your dreams. Many users see results in a few months, but it can vary from person to person. During this time, it’s essential to take care of your skin and beard. Regularly washing and moisturizing your face can help create a healthy environment for your beard to flourish.

How to Grow a Beard Faster in 7 Days
Growing a beard can feel like a waiting game, but did you know that you can kickstart that growth in just seven days? Here’s how to get your beard looking fuller and more impressive in a week!
First, start with a solid grooming routine. Clean your face daily with a gentle cleanser to remove dirt and oil. This helps create a healthy environment for your hair to grow. Next, exfoliate your skin a couple of times a week. This removes dead skin cells and encourages new hair growth.
One of the best-kept secrets for beard growth is castor oil. This natural oil is packed with nutrients that nourish your hair follicles. Applying a few drops of castor oil to your face daily can help strengthen your hair and fill in any patchy spots. Massage it gently to boost blood circulation, which is essential for growth.
Don’t forget about your diet! Eating foods rich in vitamins A, B, C, and E can make a big difference. Incorporate fruits, vegetables, and proteins like eggs and nuts into your meals. Staying hydrated is also crucial, so drink plenty of water throughout the day.
Finally, get enough sleep and manage your stress levels. Lack of rest and high stress can slow down hair growth, so try to relax and rest well.

GROW A BEARD: Now you can have a cool, full beard
Just let it grow? It’s not that easy! Follow our tips and you will soon be rewarded with a magnificent full beard
What separates a good beard from a great beard is the shape; it should accentuate the jawline and make it appear more square. And while genes determine how quickly and how thick your beard grows, there are a few steps every man can take to ensure his beard looks great at the end of the journey, whether it lasts 2, 3, or 4 months:
The first few weeks: Stop shaving
Yes, that’s obvious. But if you’ve ever tried growing a beard (and failed), you know that not shaving isn’t nearly as easy as it sounds.
Most men don’t struggle with impatience but rather with the “side effects” of a new beard: The hair stings quite a bit at first and can cause skin irritation. And even if your beard looks patchy at the beginning, it’s worth sticking with it: as the hair gets longer, the gaps close (visually). Try to last 2 months. Then the beard looks quite full and the initial aches and pains subside. Sometimes beard rollers also stimulate your beard growth.
From now on, every day: relieve the itching with beard oil
A beard oil nourishes the skin under the beard, which is particularly interesting for men who are starting to grow a beard because it relieves the itching that some people experience until the facial skin gets used to the new splendor. It is very easy to use: rub 2-3 drops into the palms of your hands, run it through your beard, and massage it into your skin and beard hair. It is best done twice a day, in the morning and evening. We can recommend these oils to you:

Buying tip: It’s best to get a beard oil based on argan, grape seed, or jojoba oil. These oils are absorbed particularly quickly and do not leave the hair with a greasy shine. Stay away from heavily scented care creams, as they can clog your pores and make itching even worse.
Brush your beard regularly
Just as combing your hair is part of your daily morning ritual, your beard should also be brushed every day. This way you can hide any gaps in your beard and immediately see whether the beard hair has grown evenly or whether it might need to be trimmed again soon. It’s best not to use a comb, but a brush. Beard combs pull on the hair too much. This is useful for shaping a mustache but not intended for detangling the entire beard. If you’re unlucky, you’ll end up pulling out some of the hair you’ve laboriously grown.
Much gentler: a special barber brush with natural bristles. Brushing with it also stimulates blood circulation, which gives the hair optimal growth conditions.
Just trim the contours weekly
Yes, you should let it grow first. But not shaving for two months is not recommended either. If you grow a beard out of nowhere and let your hair grow the same length all around, it will initially make your face appear rounder instead of more prominent. And nobody wants that. Many men, therefore, give up breeding and resort to razors. The beard just needs some shape.
The easiest way to create more contour in your beard is to look straight into the mirror and trim only the hair that is now visible below your chin with a trimmer—without lifting your head. So shave from about halfway up the Adam’s apple.
Clean your new beard properly every day
Just because you can no longer see the skin under a beard doesn’t mean you should stop caring for it. Because the better your skin is, the healthier your beard will grow. The best way to clean your beard is with your daily shower. But please don’t use shower gel, as that would dry out the beard hair and quickly make it look brittle.
Better: wash with a mild beard shampoo and use a scrub once a week to loosen dead skin cells that get caught between the hairs.
By the way, just like for your hair, there is also a conditioner for your beard. A beard conditioner makes the rough hair a little softer, so it doesn’t scratch as much and is easier to style later. Simply massage a small amount into your still-damp beard, rinse, and you’re done. When drying, please do not rub too hard with a towel or blow-dry with hot water; both of these damage your beard hair. And only detangle with a brush when it is dry. Otherwise, the beard hairs can break.
Especially in the early stages, when your beard doesn’t have a professional cut yet, it can quickly stand out strangely and look unkempt and not cool. Instead of trimming it yourself, you should get a beard styling cream. You can rub it in your hands like hair wax. Then use flat hands and the beard brush to create the sides. Then pluck the hair on your upper lip and chin into shape.
Never just trim yourself in between
You are welcome to clean the contours of your beard during the growing phase, but you should never trim the “inside” yourself. If you use the trimming attachment of your electric razor, you will trim everything back to a uniform stubble length, and the beard should ultimately get a distinctive shape that (unfortunately) only a barber can achieve. So go professional!
You should only have your beard trimmed by a professional. Photo: Allef Vinicius / Unsplash.com
After 2 months off to the barber
When your beard reaches about 2–3 cm in length, it needs a decent trim. You definitely shouldn’t take this into your own hands, because now it’s time to pave the shape for the future: a distinctive contour. Only a professional can do that.
A barber can also trim the length on the sides so that the beard fits your face shape and flatters you. Either way, the hair on the sides should be shorter than on the chin, also so that the beard blends well into your sideburns and thus into your hairstyle.
A good beard trim will last up to 3 months if you do your homework.
This means (only) shaving the specified contours once a week, washing thoroughly every day, and caring for the hair with oil and a brush.
It can take months to achieve your #beardgoals. And this time can be annoying. You will probably often think about simply shaving off your beard.
But it’s worth persevering: The first few months are the most maintenance-intensive, and over time, it becomes more and more relaxed for beard wearers. Then it’s just a matter of maintaining the status quo with a little care.

The right beard for the face shape and style: A barber explains which beard style suits whom
It’s the same with a beard as it is with a haircut: there is the perfect look for every head shape and every style.
The only question is: which one is it? We asked a professional. Cologne-based Francesco Bottini is a master hairdresser, barber, and King C. Gillette expert. If anyone knows which beard suits whom best, it’s him. So, read carefully, style it, and prepare for compliments. You’ll get a lot of these soon.
“In the photo, you can see that the beard emphasizes the cheekbones, making the facial features appear even more striking and masculine,” says Bottini. Perfect for anyone with round facial features.” And especially suitable for young men who want to appear more grown-up. “Even with slight gaps in the beard, you can wear this look well.”
The professional recommends trimming the beard regularly with a 0.8-millimeter attachment on the trimmer and shaving the neckline smoothly if there is a lot of beard growth. Otherwise, the look is extremely easy to care for: wash your face and you’re done!
How can I hide my double chin with a beard?
A beard can change your entire face shape. The longer it is, the greater the opportunity to model your moves.
Yes, the more angular the beard, the more likely it is to conceal unwanted curves. Photo: Gillette / PR
Bottini advises: “So that the beard looks as striking as in the photo, the sides should be kept shorter. The hair can taper a little longer towards the front.” This makes the lower half of the face appear more angular.
Francesco’s tip for a double chin: shave the neckline nice and straight. If the lower contour frays, the “problem area” is not hidden but rather emphasized. Because beard hair tends to be drier than head hair, you should care for a beard of this length with beard oil.
Which beard suits every man?

Advantage: The look is particularly versatile. In everyday life, the beard look looks casual. If you want to be more elegant, for example, at work or for a special event, you can style your hair back, and the one- to two-week beard immediately looks elegant.
For care, the professional recommends a beard shampoo and beard oil, which counteract the typical pricking of this length. But you can write your article on the topic. Of course, we did. Here are more tips to combat itching in the beard.
Who suits a mustache?
A mustache is a special eye-catcher. Photo: Unsplash.com
“A mustache like this suits a guy with an elegant look. If you wear a classic men’s haircut (short sides, longer top hair with a parting), this is the best choice,” says Francesco Bottini. The combination of shaved hair like this on the head creates an exciting break in style. “It certainly doesn’t appeal to everyone,” said the expert. Either way, a mustache needs to be cared for. Trimming it yourself regularly (or having it trimmed) is a must.
Barber Bottini advises: “First comb the hairs downwards and then style them from the middle of the lip to the left and right so that a middle parting can be seen in the mustache. Then, depending on the desired length, carefully cut off the protruding hairs with scissors or a trimmer.” The mustache hairs should extend longer from the middle of the lip outwards so that the beard later appears well-proportioned. A beard balm is suitable for styling. Here, you can find more information about mustaches and Movember.
Which beard is more casual and elegant?
The combination of stubble, beard, and mustache can come across as casual but also smart. Photo: Gillette / PR
Barber Bottini knows: “The combination of a 1-week beard with an emphasized mustache goes well with casual, sporty looks like in the photo, but it would also look very good with a business outfit and make the wearer appear particularly smart.” When trimming, Francesco recommends trimming the beard to 6 millimeters. The mustache remains slightly longer at 10 mm. Important: “As soon as you have a beard as long as this, you should use a beard shampoo and an oil. The latter keeps the hair supple.
Francesco’s tip: Leave the oil on like a mask overnight for an extra care kick.”
You can do particularly strong tricks with a long, full beard
Contrasts play an important role: If the beard is angular, the hairstyle should be round. Photo: Unsplash.com
Our expert has an extra-long, full beard with an angular contour. The barber explains: “I often wear round glasses. The angular beard is a cool contrast; both elements reinforce each other. The beard looks even more angular, and the glasses look more rounded. As you can see in the photo, the hairstyle falls more in line with the beard. This is important. If the hair was styled too angular upwards, the head would look like a box.” Good to know: Depending on how high the contour is on the cheeks, you can make the face longer (low contour) or shorter (high contour). If you shave the round cheek area, the facial features appear softer. If the contour remains accurate, it makes the wearer particularly distinctive.
How can you trick narrow faces into making them wider?
Sideburns make the face appear wider. Photo: Unsplash.com
Most beards today are shaved so that the sides of the hair merge briefly into the beard and the beard becomes slightly longer towards the bottom. But that’s not always flattering. “If someone has a very narrow face, you should always leave the sideburns a little fuller, for example. This tricks the head into being a little wider and looks much more advantageous,” says Bottini.
No matter whether you have a lot of beard growth or want to appear less, sportier, or more elegant, there is a suitable beard for every man. So go to the barber or grab the razor; you now know which look suits you best.

Do you want to grow a beard? Which styles are popular, who they suit, and how to care for your new look
First things first: Before you decide on a new beard style, consider whether it suits your type and whether you want to undertake the ‘beard’ project. Decorative facial hair requires attention and care, especially if you want to grow more than a 3-day beard. An unkempt beard quickly appears unattractive and careless. In addition to the trendy beard styles, we also tell you about the best care products and styling tools here.
Which beard styles are trending in 2024?
Dejan Garz, a hairdresser and hair influencer with more than 100K followers on Instagram and a beard himself, knows: “Beards remain trendy. Whatever you like is allowed. A 3-5-day beard is always possible, as is a full beard. Popular: a Mustache à la Magnum.”
Are XL beards still in?
“The full beard remains a trend,” says our expert, Dejan Garz. How long it can be depends less on fashion than on individual beard growth. “The beard should not fray as it gets longer.” To ensure that the beard grows nice and thick and is not too wild, the professional recommends trimming any protruding hairs with scissors from time to time. “Similar to a boxwood.”
How do I grow my beard?
Anyone with a beard will know that the first phase of growing is not that easy—the beard itches, the skin becomes dry, and the beard hairs become wilder as they grow. Often, this is the reason why the beard is shaved off again. All of these unpleasant side effects can be prevented with the right beard care. You look better and feel better.
So that the beard doesn’t prick, it needs to be cared for appropriately. How does it work?
A beard can be groomed and styled in the same way as your hairstyle. “I wash my hair with shampoo, and even a conditioner goes into the beard to make it soft,” says Dejan Garz. Hair conditioner in the beard, is that necessary? “Yes, because there are softeners in it. Beard oil also ensures suppleness. Make sure the oil is not overly perfumed. Fragrances can irritate the skin under the beard and have a drying effect.”
Which beard care products are best?
Thanks to the ongoing beard trend, numerous care products are specifically tailored to facial hair. The colleagues with beards in the Ol Hairstyles editorial team, for example, swear by the beard shampoo from Brooklyn Soap Company.
Which beard suits me?
“It depends on the growth of the beard and the shape of the face. Some have very thick hair growth on their cheeks, others don’t. Some have a round face, others an elongated one,” says hairdresser Dejan Garz and explains further: “With the right beard hairstyle you can emphasize your advantages and optimize the shape of your face.
I am the best example: I have a flat chin and a relatively wide neck. That’s why I wear a very pointed beard and leave the hair on my chin long. That makes it visually slimmer. I like it! ” Below we will tell you which beard ideally emphasizes your advantages.
The 3-day beard is always trendy
A full-coverage beard like the 3-day beard makes the face appear rounder and softer, which is why it is particularly suitable for rectangular features. “But it suits most men,” says Dejan Garz. To prevent your 3-day beard from becoming a full beard, trim the stubble to the same length every few days with a beard trimmer. Then use the razor to clean the contours of the neck and cheeks. However, please do not cut too precisely, otherwise the 3-day beard will quickly look like a painting. Something more natural is more authentic and trendy.

The full beard remains popular
The full beard visually elongates the face. This makes it particularly beneficial for round faces. For the same reason, it should not be worn too long on narrow faces. A full beard is not shaved, just trimmed and styled. Even if it looks wild and daring, regular care is important. So wash it daily with shampoo, as already mentioned by Dejan Garz, but particularly important: “Be sure to care for full beards with conditioner (for example from Olaplex) and oil,” and there are also special styling tools. Balms hold and shine.

Fashionable people now wear mustaches
According to Garz, mustaches are an absolute megatrend. The great thing about it is that a classic mustache suits all face shapes and therefore suits anyone whose beard grows full enough in this area. The pronounced shapes of the mustache are more for lovers, in which the beard hair, sometimes several ten centimeters long, is styled, twirled, curled, or curled. There is no great care here. Because it’s just a mustache. “I always think it’s nice when it doesn’t cover the upper lip but is cut clean and straight there,” says Garza.

Beard hairstyle in an undone look: the 10-day beard
A 10-day beard is the perfect compromise between a full beard and a 3-day beard. This beard style looks bold but well-groomed. It looks particularly good on men with a more rectangular or elongated face. They tend to look slim and sometimes even bony. In this case, the 6-day beard “covers” these hard contours and can therefore look appealing. For an authentic 10-day beard look, the beard must look well-groomed, but not done. Therefore, under no circumstances should you shave the contours too precisely.

And which beard hairstyle do you like best? If you can’t commit, just try out a different style regularly. You have enough inspiration now.
Conclusion
Beard styles are more than just facial hair; they express who we are. From classic looks like the full beard to trendy styles like the goatee, each one tells a story. A well-groomed beard can make someone feel confident and unique. Whether you’re going for rugged or refined, choosing the right style is important. So whether it’s short and neat or long and wild, embrace your beard choice because it adds character to your look!
Find out here what arguments speak for dry shaving and what you should consider if you have decided on the dry option
Dry shaving is good for those who like it quick and convenient: apply pre-shave, turn on the razor, and off you go. The risk of cutting yourself is also low. However, with this type of shaving, the hair is only clipped to the surface of the skin. So you can see it faster.
While the hair is cut off during wet shaving, the shaving heads of the dry shaver shave it off and remove a few thousandths of a millimeter of the stratum corneum of the skin. Shaved skin and hair pimples can then settle as horny dust in the pores and clog them.
To prevent this, you should apply a pre-shave beforehand. It straightens beard hair and contains antiseptic ingredients that protect against inflammation. After shaving, you should also put on an aftershave.
When is it better to dry?
Dry shaving may be more beneficial for acne and infectious skin. Because injuries are avoided. Disinfect the shaving heads occasionally and use care formulas prescribed by the dermatologist.

Razor care: The most important tips for machine freaks The skin is cared for, but the razor is often neglected. Here are the most important tips for dry shavers:
How do you properly clean a dry razor?
Don’t worry, it’s not that complicated at all. No matter how many swinging “heads” the thing has, the process is always the same with foil shavers: take down the foil, blow it out, or tap it out. Clean the shaving head yourself with the original brush; its bristles are precisely tailored to the razor.
If this is lost in your bathroom, you can get a new one from specialist retailers for around two euros. It’s even easier with a special cleaning spray (around five euros), so the dirt comes off almost by itself. You can clean the rotating and removable knife block inside in the same way. Don’t forget to unplug the power plug beforehand!
How often do you have to disinfect the shaving head area?
Jürgen Höser from the manufacturer Braun recommends it approximately every six weeks. But please, not with hard liquor. Better: A mild special solution (you can get it for around three euros in the razor department or specialist shops).
So that everything runs smoothly the next time you shave, be sure to re-grease afterward. To do this, spread a drop of sewing machine oil on the shaving blade with your finger. Don’t forget medium- and long-hair trimmers.
And a device with rotating shaving heads?
There is no need to rotate either; these can be easily removed. You can even rinse them underwater. Then you also have access to the beard hair collection container and can empty it. “Every Philips can be easily disinfected with the Action Cleaner; you should do this approximately every three weeks,” explains Petra Alisch from Philips. The shaving head is placed on the device, and the disinfectant solution is pumped through—and that’s it.
When do you have to change the blade?
Well, at the latest, when shaving gets under your skin! No, seriously, you shouldn’t wait until you injure yourself with a broken blade. When a new cutting part is due, it depends on the user. On average, it is recommended to replace the foil and knife block together after 18 months at the latest.
Beard oil expert Mike explains in an interview what good beard oil consists of, what it does, how to use it optimally, and how to make your beard oil
A good beard oil gives your beard a subtle shine, makes it supple, and gives it a pleasant scent. It also nourishes the skin under your beard, which is particularly interesting for men who are just starting to grow a beard because it relieves the itching that some people experience until their facial skin gets used to the new splendor.
What ingredients make a beard oil a good beard oil?
Mike Seebauer is a passionate full-beard and the managing director of the online shop Blackbeards. Photo: ar-photography and markuspictures
It depends on a balanced mixture of different carrier oils that have positive properties for beard hair and facial skin. Most beard oils contain almond oil, grape seed oil, apricot kernel oil, jojoba oil, and argan oil, and hemp oil, macadamia nut oil, and squalane are also good.
How do you use beard oils optimally, and what is the right amount?
The application is very simple. Put a few drops of beard oil in the palms of your hands, rub it in, run your fingers through the beard, and massage it into the skin and beard hair. Many men, myself included, tend to take too much oil. This doesn’t do any harm, but it ensures that the beard is very shiny. If you don’t like that, it’s better to do it sparingly. You can still add more.
It is best done twice a day, in the morning and evening. You can’t make mistakes.
Should you use any other beard care products?
A brush. You use this to massage the skin of your face, absorb sebum, and distribute it through your hair. Long beard hair in particular is no longer supplied with sufficient sebum right down to the tips, which causes them to become dry and brittle. A brush is unbeatable in combination with beard oil, so you can give your beard a little shape.
How can you make your beard oil?
You can easily make beard oil yourself. It’s fun to experiment and search for the perfect oil for your beard. Start with a selection of the carrier oils mentioned above and try out different mixing ratios.
Some oils are rich in antioxidants, contain valuable vitamin E, have an anti-inflammatory effect, increase elasticity, and provide moisture for skin and beard hair. A good basis, for example, is 10 ml each of grape seed oil, almond oil, and apricot kernel oil.
And then you create your own, very individual scent with essential oils. I always use 5 to 10 drops of essential oil for every 30 ml of carrier oil.
Example: Two drops each of ylang-ylang and patchouli and one drop of cedar wood.
Important: Essential oils should never be applied undiluted directly to the skin; the high concentration can at least irritate the skin if not even damage it.
Our interview partner, Mike Seebauer, is the managing director of Blackbeards, where you can find all sorts of beard care products. For Mike and his team, beards are clearly “both a symbol and an expression of masculinity. You can recognize real men by their beards. Period.”

Three-day beard, full beard, or mustache: The hair on your face needs to be cared for. Here you will find tips for proper beard care
Just let it grow and be fine. Unfortunately, it’s not that easy. Unfortunately, nature has blessed only very few men with an even beard and soft hair.
This is how you keep your beard in top shape.
Beard care step 1: wash your hair
Yes, beard hair needs to be washed daily! On the one hand, sweat and food particles accumulate in the gaps between the hair over the day. On the other hand, the skin sheds dead cells every day that get caught in the hair and can irritate the skin of the face.
The best way to clean your beard is with your daily shower. But please don’t use shower gel, as that would dry out the beard hair and quickly make it look brittle.
Better: just rinse with water and use a special beard shampoo about every three days. And if you don’t have that at hand, at least use a mild hair shampoo. Just like for your hair, there is also a conditioner for your beard. A beard conditioner makes the rough hair a little softer, so it doesn’t scratch as much and is easier to style later. Simply massage a small amount into your still-damp beard, rinse, and you’re done.
Beard care tip: Be careful when drying! Don’t rub or rub, just pat dry; beard hair quickly split ends. Therefore, be careful when blow-drying. If you want to blow dry your beard quickly, don’t do it too hot.
Beard care step 2: trim the wild growth
Only a regularly trimmed or trimmed beard will grow evenly and look well-groomed. Otherwise, a full beard will fray and mustaches can become an involuntary dirt-trap. You can easily trim 3-day beards with a shaving attachment on your electric razor. Special beard scissors are suitable for trimming longer beards to bring the hair back to the same length.
Beard care tip: Pay particular attention to ensuring that the contours of the desired beard shape are visible. This means your beard automatically looks well-groomed. The area where the sideburns merge into the beard needs to be touched up particularly often.

Beard care step 3: tame stubborn hair
No matter the length of the beard, a beard needs more care than a shaved face. In addition to washing, shaving, and trimming, the daily care ritual also includes massaging beard oil. This makes the beard’s hair less prickly. Your girlfriend will thank you.
Beard care tip: Simply put 2 or 3 drops on your fingertips, rub in, and run your fingers through your beard. This way, you care for your beard hair and the skin on your chin. It makes the beard softer, and more malleable and gives it an elegant shine.
Beard care step 4: comb the beard into shape
Just as combing your hair is part of your daily morning ritual, your beard should also be combed every day. In this way, you may be able to conceal gaps in the beard and immediately see whether the beard hair has grown evenly or perhaps needs to be trimmed again soon.
Beard care tip: A beard comb is particularly suitable for smaller beards, such as a mustache. A fluffy beard brush is the ideal grooming equipment for those with a full beard.
Beard care step 5: Styling for a well-groomed beard
Bad hair day on your face? Special styling products offer quick help here. After the care routine, a wax or balm is ideal for trendy beard hairstyles like this one. Such styling products for the beard give the hair enough hold and shape without leaving stiff beard hair.
Beard care tip: A wax stick is perfect for on-the-go. Simply apply the wax—similar to lip balm—directly to the beard, shape it with your fingers, and you’re done.
Beard care products such as beard combs, brushes, scissors, shampoo, and oil are not frills but are an essential part of maintaining and caring for a beard.
