Do you want to cut your hair yourself? With our tips for men’s haircuts, you can now become your hairdresser
Tiresome topic: hairdresser appointment! Many men like to go to the hairdresser spontaneously and are reluctant to make an appointment weeks or months in advance. There are now apps like Treatwell that you can use to get an appointment in your area at short notice, but if it’s just a matter of cleaning the contours (sideburns and neck), you can do it yourself.
We have put together all the information you need to cut your hair, and the right hair clippers to the exact instructions so that nothing goes wrong.
What do I need to cut my hair myself?
The equipment is particularly important for a successful haircut. What you need now is a hair clipper. What is particularly important is that the device has several attachments so that you can work with different lengths later. Here are our recommendations for every budget:
For the thrifty: Braun HC 5090 hair clipper
Despite its affordable price, the Braun hair clipper offers all the features you need for cutting hair. It has length-adjustable trimmer attachments for short and long hair and a special setting for short hair without an attachment. Disadvantage: Although you can wash it under running water, it is not suitable for wet use. In addition, the interior is made of plastic, which does not necessarily have to be annoying and can still be durable.
One device, many functions: The hair trimmer from Philips is the perfect choice for anyone who would like to have a multi-groom device because the multi-groomer comes with a total of 14 attachments: 3 for the hair, 4 for the body, 6 for the bear, and 1 for the nose and ear hair.
Plus points: You can use the multi-groomer in the shower, and because the groomer is made of metal, it is particularly durable.
Pro tip: Panasonic ER-DGP82
The luxury version among hair clippers: Thanks to the carbon coating, the Panasonic hardly wears out, less heat is generated, and the device has a long service life. Thanks to the slim, ergonomic design with partially rubberized surfaces, the razor fits particularly well in the hand. The rotary control for adjusting the cutting length is particularly practical. This allows you to easily adjust the cutting length while cutting.
What do I do if something goes wrong while cutting my hair?
To ensure that nothing goes wrong when cutting your hair, it’s best to start with a longer attachment. If you accidentally shave an edge, you can always shave again with the shorter attachment and correct the mishap. By the way, cut edges are particularly noticeable if the hair falls straight or is not styled. The best way to tousle your hair is with a little styling paste, for example, our favorite from La Biosthetique “Homme Matt Grip”. Thanks to the undone look, any unevenness is no longer noticeable.
Instructions: What is the best way to cut my hair?
To prevent your DIY haircut from going wrong, you should stand in front of a mirror and position a second mirror directly behind you. This way, you can see yourself from all sides and make sure you don’t miss a single strand. Everything ready? Then you can get started.
This is how you trim the sideburns on your own
- Trim your beard as usual
- Place a shaving attachment about an inch long on your razor
- Now trim the sideburns with short upward movements (like in the video below)
- Then remove the trimming attachment
- Fold one ear down and trim the hair around it in a curve
- Repeat on the other side
- Just look in the mirror
- Hold the razor horizontally and shorten the sideburns to the desired length. Done!
This is how you shave your neck
- Comb all the hair on the back of the head smoothly down
- Imagine an imaginary line where you want your hair to end
- Shave exactly in line with the razor in the middle of the neck
- The shaved area is now considered the reference point
- Tip: It’s better to shorten it a little first and then rework it, rather than setting the razor too high.
- Using a dry or wet razor, shave off any hairs that are still sticking out and causing problems below the cut edge, and you’re done!
This is how you shave your head
Think beforehand about how short you want your hair to be. Approach it slowly and start with a longer essay. You can still shorten it. Good to know: Anything shorter than about ten millimeters shows through the scalp. So that’s close to the look of a bald head. By the way, you can find the best hairstyles for thin hair here.
- Be sure to shave your hair when it is dry. When wet, it is too soft, and the razor cannot grip it well.
- Start at the top of your head and shear the hair against the grain, i.e., against the direction of growth—from the forehead towards the back of the head.
- On the back of your neck, you shave from bottom to top.
- You shave the sides diagonally from the front towards the back of the head.
- Important: The neck and sides should be a little shorter than the top of the head. If all the hair is one length, the head appears round. If the sides are shorter, it makes the cut more distinctive and professional; it looks like you’ve been to the hairdresser.
If you don’t want a complicated new cut, you can also cut your hair at home. You now know what you need and how you should go about it. You should always remember: It’s better to underperform than to become overconfident. And if you don’t dare, now is the best time to breed. By the way, we have even written a special article on how to grow hair and look good doing it.
