It looks masculine and sexy; a 3-day beard suits every man and is well received by women. How to care for your stubble beard
Masculine, sexy, and a bit daring: This is the effect everyone who wears a 3-day beard hopes for. And you’re right: A survey by the dating platform Parship showed that people with three-day beards appear more attractive to women.
2 millimeters of beard hair is usually enough for men to change their image: from soft to sexy, from adjusted to adventurous, from correct to robust. But only if the beard is well-groomed. We’ll tell you here how to turn your stubble into a cool 3-day beard.
When do you have a 3-day beard?
Under no circumstances should you take the “3 days” in the name as a guideline. Hormonal, genetic, and seasonal conditions influence when the typical 3-day beard length is reached.
By definition, with a 3-day beard, the facial skin still shines through; the beard hair has not yet changed its growth towards the chin but stands out pointedly from the skin. A typical 3-day beard is between 0.5 and 4 mm long. Which length suits whom best varies from man to man. As well as how long it takes him to grow his 3-day beard.
Who suits a 3-day beard?
- Men with strong and evenly dense beard growth are predestined for a 3-day beard. This is how you stimulate your beard’s growth.
- Even men whose beard growth has slight gaps can wear a 3-day beard. However, you should set your trimmer to no less than 2 mm. The slightly longer hairs can help conceal smaller gaps in your beard.
- If your beard has too many gaps, you should try a different beard shape.
- It doesn’t matter whether your beard is blonde or dark. The 3-day beard suits every beard color. But for very dark-haired men, the impression of a 3-day beard often arises from just 0.5 mm, while very light-haired guys sometimes need up to 5 mm of stubble. We’ll show you the coolest celebrity beards here.
How do you shave a 3-day beard?
On average, beard hair grows about 0.3 mm per day. This means that most men achieve the daring 3-day beard look in just a short time. Gaps in growth are no reason to panic. Each of your approximately 7,000 to 15,000 beard hairs has a different growth rhythm, which is why they are not all equally visible. Because the hair grows at different speeds, you should trim your beard every 2-3 days to get a uniform length and ultimately maintain it.
Tip: Set the beard trimmer to the shortest possible length, between 0.5 and 4 mm. Which 3-day beard length you ultimately choose is a matter of taste. But as a rule of thumb:
- 0.5 mm is still considered a beard shadow and not yet a 3-day beard.
- The classic 3-day beard is approximately 1.5 mm long
- Blonde hair needs 2.5 mm to 3.5 mm to be recognizable as a 3-day beard.
- At 5 mm at the latest, you can no longer speak of a 3-day beard.
Clean contours turn stubble into a beard hairstyle
Sorry, guys. If you think that letting it grow and trimming it regularly is enough for a sexy three-day beard look, we have to disappoint you. Without shaved contours on the neckline and cheeks, the 3-day beard quickly appears unkempt. And after all, you want a cool 3-day beard and not a shaggy “I’m too lazy to shave” mess. With a little practice and a few tricks, you can quickly create defined beard contours.
It makes sense to have the contours shaved at the barber to best match the shape of your face and then shave them every two days in the future.
This works as follows:
- The cleanest beard contours are shaved with a razor. However, since their cutting edge is incredibly sharp and handling requires skill, you should first practice this extremely cool shaving method extensively with a professional.
- The easiest way is to shave contours with wet razors or safety razors. Ideal for 3-day beards are 3-in-1 razors such as the Fusion5 from Gillette, which can be used to shave, trim, and style sharp, defined contour lines at the same time.
- So that you can recognize the unaesthetic “frays” and always keep an eye on the contour line when shaving, you should use beard oil or transparent shaving gel (such as from American Crew) for contour shaving.
- Dry shavers are also an option. There are precision beard stylers (for example, from Philips) that project red laser lines onto the skin along the cutting edge, thereby enabling precise cutting edges.
Which 3-day beard shape suits my face shape?
A beard shapes the shape of your face. Anthony Stölting from Eric-Barbier in Hamburg explains how the contours of the beard can influence the shape of the face:
- For round faces, clear contours are extremely important. The beard should be cut a little more angular towards the front so that the face also appears more angular and striking.
- If you have a rather angular face, you can make the contours a little softer. The beard should not be too pointed, especially on the chin.
A double chin can be easily concealed with a 3-day beard. The lower contour should then start as low as possible on the neck.
This is how you care for your 3-day beard
Like your hair, you should also wash your beard with a mild shampoo. There are now even special beard shampoos for this purpose. They are particularly gentle so that the beard hairs retain the essential part of their natural sebum protective layer and do not dry out.
What helps if your beard itches?
Let’s be clear: beards don’t itch. It is the skin that reacts irritably to beard growth. The smartest thing you can do is not scratch or pull your beard hairs. Scratching only worsens skin irritation. And if you pull on the beard hair, you will damage the hair root in the long term, causing it to stop producing completely. The result would be irregular beard growth.
So, keep calm! It is also recommended to take careful care of your skin. With regular peeling, you can remove excess flakes from the skin that prevent the beard hair from growing. A light moisturizer also soothes itchy skin. There are no products specifically tailored to the 3-day beard, such as the moisturizing fluid for the 3-day beard from L’Oréal Men Expert or the sensitive 3-day beard hydro gel from Nivea Men.
The good news at the end is that, over time, the skin gets used to the beard growth and calms down.
What’s the point of beard oil?
3-day beards must be stubbly and trimmed every 2 to 4 days, depending on beard growth. Unfortunately, freshly shaved beard hair is usually hard, prickly, and sharp, like the ends of wire. Which is particularly likely to bother your loved one. Beard oil (for example, from Brooklyn Soap Company) softens the tough hair a little. Drizzle 2 to 3 drops onto your fingertips and massage in gently.
When in doubt, always use less rather than too much. Is oil not your thing? Special beard care products such as “Balea Men Fresh 3-Day Beard Care Gel” contain softeners that also make the beard hair more supple. Are you into DIY? Just make your beard oil!
A 3-day beard only brings advantages: annoying shaving and, therefore, skin problems such as shaving tape are no longer necessary. The stubble creates visually more distinctive and therefore more masculine features, provided that the beard is well-groomed and does not sprout wildly. So, wash and care for it every day, and don’t forget to trim regularly.
